WASHINTON, DC. – Seven members of Washington’s congressional delegation are asking the U.S. Department of Justice to respect the state’s law that legalizes possession of small amounts of marijuana for adults 21 and older.

A letter was sent to the department and signed by Democratic senators Maria Cantwell and Patty Murray and Democratic representatives Adam Smith, Suzan DelBene, Denny Heck, Derek Kilmer and Jim McDermott.

The letter urges Attorney General Eric Holder not to pursue preemption of new marijuana laws that are now in effect in Washington and Colorado.

The delegation also asks DOJ to announce its decision on the matter as soon as possible.
