Millions of “anti-coal” money disputed in PDC complaint

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Washington State Republican Party says a California billionaire illegally gave money that may have trickled down to support candidates in Whatcom County.

The party has filed a complaint with the state Public Disclosure Commission alleging that Tom Steyer contributed $3 million to his “Nextgen” Climate Action Committee three days after the state’s deadline for large contributions.

Republican Party spokesperson Keith Skipper says some of that money went to local candidates who he says are anti-coal and against the Gateway Pacific Terminal proposal.

He says Steyer’s committee gave money to Washington Conservation Voters, which then spent some of it on Whatcom County Council campaigns.

The group also gave money to Whatcom Wins, the coordinating campaign for the four candidates endorsed by Whatcom Democrats.

Whatcom County Council candidates will not say where they stand on the coal terminal issue due to the judicial nature of the decision they will be asked to make.
