OLYMPIA, Wash. – A recent infusion of cash from seed giant Monsanto has more doubled the war chest for the campaign to reject a statewide measure requiring labeling of genetically engineered foods.
New campaign finance reports show opponents of Initiative 522 have raised $7.8 million, while supporters of food labeling have raised $3.3 million.
Advocates say the measure would allow consumers to make informed decisions about their food.
Critics say it would increase costs and burdens for farmers and businesses.
Monsanto has given a total of $4.8 million, making it the top donor working to defeat I-522 this November.
The Grocery Manufacturers Association and Bayer CropScience are also top contributors to the No on I-522 campaign.
Dr. Bronner’s Magic Soaps has given nearly $1 million to the Yes on I-522.
Other top contributors include the Organic Consumers Fund and PCC Natural Markets.
