Mount Baker Highway high-speed chase and shootout injures two

Two suspects are now in the hospital with gunshot wounds after getting into a firefight with police on the Mount Baker Highway near Smith Road this evening.

Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks says it started with police pursuing after alleged robbers in a high-speed chase. It ended in a fire battle with officers near the roundabout at Smith Road.

Bellingham Police officers, Whatcom County Sheriff’s deputies and U.S. Border Patrol agents, including a U.S. Borders & Customs helicopter, responded to the scene.

Medics transported two suspects to local hospitals. It appears officers involved in the shootout are okay and did not suffer any injuries.

Police have blocked off a portion of the highway at Smith Road and Kelly Road. Traffic is being detoured around the area.

The highway is expected to be closed for hours as police continue their investigation.
