Natural gas leak at Main Street bridge in Lynden

A severed gas main line has caused a natural gas leak in Lynden this evening. The leak occurred on the construction site for the Main Street Bridge.

Cascade Natural Gas crews are on scene. About 100 people are evacuated from nearby homes.

Whatcom County Fire and Rescue and Lynden Police have blocked off about a quarter mile radius around the leak.

Firefighters are spraying water on the main line to contain the leak. Cascade crews will be out on scene for several hours or more as they dig down to the pipeline to cap the severed gas main line.

Gas can be smelled in the air for some distance around the site.
