OLYMPIA, Wash. – Changes in Washington’s boating laws are taking effect later this month.
Those changes include upgrading boating under the influence from a misdemeanor to a gross misdemeanor, with a penalty of up to $5,000 and a year in jail.
Anyone who operates a vessel will be deemed to have given consent for a breath test if a law-enforcement officer has reasonable cause to suspect BUI.
A boat operator who refuses a breath test after an officer suspects BUI will be subject to a penalty of up to $1,000.
