BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Whatcom County’s prosecuting attorney says two officers acted appropriately when they returned fire on an armed man at the Villa Inn August 26.

The Ferndale Police Department joined the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office in the investigation into the shooting.

Two officers went to pick up 54-year-old Alex Johnson for a mental health detention when Johnson fired on them with a sawed-off shotgun.

Prosecuting Attorney David McEachran says Bellingham Police officers Chris Johnston and Steven Moyer were within their training to use deadly force in an effort to protect the public from Johnson.

Johnson has been charged with two counts of first degree assault and unlawful possession of a firearm.

He is being held on $1 million bail.
