MOUNT VERNON, Wash. – The Interstate-5 Skagit River bridge will have a new name.
The Washington State Transportation Commission has unanimously voted to name the bridge the “Trooper Sean M. O’Connell Junior Memorial Bridge.”
Senator Kevin Ranker made the request, along with many other local officials.
Trooper O’Connell, a 16-year veteran with the state patrol, died in a collision on May 31 while directing traffic through detours set up around the bridge, which collapsed May 23.
Ranker says it’s the least that can be done to honor Trooper O’Connell for his service to the community.
There is no word yet on when the new name will be dedicated.
