Brina Sych named Red Lion/GNAC Defensive Player of the Week
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Western Washington University defender Brina Sych has been named the Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 29-Oct. 5
Sych, a senior from Vancouver (graduate of Union High School), helped the nationally second-ranked Vikings remain undefeated at 9-0-0 with home victories over No.23 Seattle Pacific, 2-1, and Central Washington, 2-0.
In addition to organizing WWU’s back line against SPU, Sych scored the Vikings’ first goal on her only shot of the week in the 29th minute. Sych followed her performance Thursday with an equally impressive defensive effort Saturday.
Sych, who was a second-team All-American and GNAC Defender of the Year last season, has one goal and three assists this season, while leading a defense that has allowed just two goals.
WWU travels to Simon Fraser on Thursday, Oct. 10, and plays at Seattle Pacific on Saturday, Oct. 12.
Boerger named Red Lion/GNAC Defensive Player of the Week
BELLINGHAM, Wash. — Western Washington University middle blocker Emily Boerger has been named the Red Lion/Great Northwest Athletic Conference Volleyball Defensive Player of the Week for Sept. 29-Oct. 5.
Boerger, a senior from Marysville (graduate of Marysville-Pilchuck High School), had one solo block and eight block assists as the Vikings swept Northwest Nazarene and Central Washington in home matches, holding them to a combined attack percentage of .022.
Boerger also had 19 kills and hit for a .483 percentage in the two wins.
Boerger ranked No.2 nationally among NCAA Division II hitting percentage leaders entering play last week. She currently is averaging 2.58 kills per match on .443 hitting and 1.16 blocks.
WWU, 11-1 overall and ranked No.9 in last week’s AVCA DII Top 25 Poll, is back on the road this week, traveling to Saint Martin’s on Thursday, Oct. 10 (7 p.m.), and to Western Oregon on Saturday, Oct. 12 (7 p.m.), for GNAC counters.
