Pod jumping orca lends insight to biologists

AP News, KGMI News Reporting

FRIDAY HARBOR, Wash. – An endangered Puget Sound killer whale is helping biologists learn about the migration of orcas.

Federal biologists tagged a 22-year-old whale known as “L-87” or “Onyx” just after Christmas.

He’s been hanging around with a different pod of whales than his own “L” pod, known as the “J” pod.

Biologists are trying to figure out where they go in the winter and why the “J” pod doesn’t migrate farther south to California like other orca whales.
