BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Renata Kowalczyk is holding on to a thin lead over Dan Robbins in the Port of Bellingham District 1 commissioner race.

They are separated by just 166 votes in the first vote count.

Robbins says his experience fits the bill.

Kowalczyk says she knows what Whatcom County really wants.

The race for the Port of Bellingham District 2 commissioner appears to favor incumbent Mike McAuley.

The first vote count has McAuley with 53 percent to challenger Ken Bell’s 47 percent.

McAuley says he’s not getting too excited yet.

McAuley says he believes he has proved himself in his first four years and hopes to get back to work soon.

There are roughly 5,000 ballots left to count, according to estimates from the Whatcom County Auditor’s office.

The next vote count will be released later today.
