MOUNT VERNON – A public memorial for fallen Washington State Trooper Sean O’Connell will be held this Thursday in Everett.
A procession of family, troopers and emergency responders will begin before the service at the Smokey Point rest area along I-5.
O’Connell died after being hit by a box truck along the detour for the Skagit River Bridge collapse.
Lawmakers representing Mount Vernon in Olympia have introduced resolutions in the state House and Senate to name the new I-5 bridge after O’Connell.
State Senator Kevin Ranker and Representatives Jeff Morris and Kristine Lytton propose the bridge be named “Trooper 1076, Sean M. O’Connell Memorial Bridge.”
The public memorial starts at 1:00 p.m. at Comcast Arena.
Meanwhile, WSP spokesperson Trooper Mark Francis is asking drivers to stay cautious through the detours.
The crash that killed O’Connell is still under investigation.
