BELLINHAM, Wash. – The Whatcom County Public Works Department has a plan to contain the naturally occurring asbestos that is coming down Sumas Mountain through Swift Creek.
Roland Middleton with the department says they hope to trap the sediment and eventually re-route the north fork of Swift Creek away from a land slide where the asbestos is coming from.
The fine crystal particles can cause lung cancer if inhaled.
Middleton says nobody has gotten sick, but they want to contain the sediment before somebody does.
He says the cleanup work cannot happen until the EPA and Department of Ecology approve the plan and they can come up with the funding.
Public Works will present the plan to the Whatcom County Council today at 10:30 a.m. at the Whatcom County Civic Center.
