WASHINGTON STATE – The U.S. Coast Guard wants everyone to have a safe and fun Fourth of July weekend and summer on lakes and ocean beaches.
Spokesman Jordan Akiyama says people need to take the ‘buddy system’ a step further.
Last weekend alone, the Coast Guard received reports of 14 people being swept out to sea by rip tides along the coasts of Washington and Oregon.
Two of those people drowned.
Akiyama says people should never underestimate how cold ocean and lake water can be on a hot day and how quickly a person can become exhausted while swimming.
