OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Board of Health says it’s adding Severe Combined Immunodeficiency, also known as “bubble boy disease,” to its list of illnesses for which babies are screened after they’re born.
Children who have the genetic disorder SCID are born with severely impaired or nonexistent immune systems.
The Board of Health decision means all babies born in Washington after January 1, 2014 will be tested for SCID during their required newborn screenings.
