Seattle acquires Frei from TFC


Seattle, WA (SportsNetwork.com) – Seattle Sounders FC announced Tuesday that
the club has acquired goalkeeper Stefan Frei from Toronto FC in exchange for a
first-round pick in the 2015 MLS SuperDraft.

The 27-year-old started at least 26 games each of his first three seasons with
TFC from 2009-11 but sustained a broken leg during preseason in 2012 and
surrendered the starting spot. He has appeared in just one league match over
the past two seasons.

“Stefan is a goalkeeper we have liked for a number of years,” Sounders head
coach Sigi Schmid said in a statement. “He is a quality professional who
brings experience and leadership to the position. Adding Stefan at this point
of his career was very attractive to us.”

Frei posted a record of 20-35-25 with Toronto in MLS play, producing 19

Toronto compensated for Frei’s departure by announcing Tuesday that the club
has signed Joe Bendik to a multi-year contract. As per team and league policy,
terms of the deal were not disclosed.
