BELLINGHAM, Wash. – It is now safe to harvest shellfish on northern Whatcom County beaches.
The Whatcom County Health Department had closed all beaches to recreational shellfish harvesting during the summer months when routine tests showed unsafe levels of paralytic shellfish poisoning or PSP.
Environmental Health Supervisor Tom Kunesh says that’s no longer the case.
Beaches located south and east of Sandy Point remain closed to shellfish harvesting where biotoxin levels remain high.
The Health Department advises beachgoers to always check the biotoxin hotline at 1-866-880-5431 or the state website before harvesting shellfish.
