BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo is warning the community about a dangerous, mentally-ill man who will soon be allowed unsupervised visits outside of the hospital.

Per Johansson has been at Western State Hospital for one month since the state committed him there in July.

The courts found him unfit to stand trial for stabbing his father to death and assaulting his mother and niece in December 2010.

Elfo says this man should not be allowed in the community unsupervised.

Elfo says the last time Johansson saw his family was when he committed the deadly attack.

Whatcom County Jail staff says they tried to work with Johansson for a couple years, but he continued to be violent and uncooperative.

Elfo has contacted state officials in hopes that DSHS will review the decision.

Johannson will be authorized to go on visits in two and a half weeks.
