SEATTLE, Wash. – A coalition of environmental groups is launching a legal battle against railway and coal companies for alleged pollution of Washington’s waterways.
The Sierra Club and several other groups have filed a lawsuit in Seattle against BNSF Railway and coal companies over pollution from uncovered coal cars.
The groups are also asking a federal judge to require BNSF to apply for Clean Water Act permits for their coal transportation runs.
The Sierra Club plans to file a similar lawsuit in the Eastern District of Washington at a later date.
