OLYMPIA, Wash. – The State of Washington is asking roughly 900 federal workers to return about a half-million dollars in unemployment benefits they received during the federal government shutdown.
Congress has voted to provide those same employees with back pay from the time they were furloughed.
Washington Employment Security Department spokesman Bill Tarrow says the average weekly unemployment check was $438, and some employees received two checks during the shutdown.
Tarrow says the department is working with federal agencies to try to get the money withheld from the next paychecks issued to those employees.
