State won’t release mentally ill killer after all

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – The Chief Criminal Deputy Prosecutor for Whatcom County says the community does not have to worry about a mentally-ill Whatcom County man being allowed outside Western State Hospital any time soon.

Per Johannson is accused of stabbing his father to death and brutally attacking his mother and niece in December 2010.

Mac Setter says the whole situation is a misunderstanding over a poorly-worded DSHS letter sent to Sheriff Bill Elfo about Per Johannson, who was committed in July.

Setter says because the court found Johannson incompetent to stand trial for the deadly attack, there is no way he would be allowed outside the hospital.

An Attorney General representing Western State Hospital claims that the original letter sent to the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office is not intended to imply that Johannson would be eligible for unsupervised visits in the near future.
