OLYMPIA, Wash. – The Washington State Department of Health says nearly 2,500 same-sex couples were married in the first four months since it became legal in Washington.
Spokesman Tim Church says that represents 20 percent of all marriages from December 6 of last year through the end of March.
Fifty-one same-sex couples were married in Whatcom County out of about 300 marriages during that time period. More than two-thirds of the marriages were lesbian couples.
About 14 percent of the couples traveled to Washington State from another state to tie the knot.
