UW freshman Williams-Goss helps USA win Gold Medal

PRAGUE, Czech Republic – Washington incoming freshman Nigel Williams-Goss scored 15 points to help Team USA roll over Serbia 82-68 in the gold medal game of the FIBA U-19 World Championship on Sunday and finish undefeated at 9-0.

The Americans controlled the game from the tip and Williams-Goss played a prominent role in Sunday’s victory. The guard’s 15 points were second most on the team and he led the talented squad with 28 minutes played. He added a rebound, assist and a steal and was 6-of-9 from the field, including 2-of-3 from 3-point range.

His point total was his highest of the tournament.

Montrezl Harrel led the Americans with 17 points. Aaron Gordon was named tournament MVP.

For the tournament, Williams-Goss averaged 7.9 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.7 steals per game. He shot 49.1 percent overall — including a team-high 42.1 percent (8-of-19) from 3-point range. He was the only American to log over 200 minutes (205) during the 9-game tournament.

Williams-Goss (Henderson, Nev./Findlay Prep) will join the rest of his Huskies’ teammates this fall as part of a touted four-man recruiting class. Also joining Williams-Goss are: Mike Anderson (Hartford, Conn./Moberly Area CC [Mo.]), Darin Johnson (Sacramento, Calif./Sheldon) and Jahmel Taylor (Los Angeles, Calif./Pacific Hills).
