OLYMPIA, Wash. – Governor Jay Inslee has declared this week Organic Week.
When the state Department of Agriculture launched the organic food program 25 years ago, Washington had less than one hundred organic farms.
There are now more than 700 organic certified farms, making Washington the third largest organic producer in the U.S.
Michele Catalano with Tilth Producers of Washington says events this week will bring together farmers, advocates and consumers to celebrate organic food and its vital role in the local economy.
Organic products represent about 4 percent of Washington’s $46 billion food and agriculture industry.
Tilth producers and local farmers kicked off organic week on last Saturday with a party at a La Conner organic farm.
An organic beer and chocolate tasting event is set for September 14 in Seattle.
