WASHINGTON, D.C.- A new report from the DC-based Trust for America’s Health ranks Washington 20th for prescription drug abuse.
The report, using 2010 data, says prescription drug-related deaths now outnumber those from heroin and cocaine combined, and outpace traffic-related deaths in 29 states and the nation’s capital.
According to the report, Washington’s prescription-drug mortality rate was 13.1 per 100,000, a 41-percent increase since 1999.
West Virginia’s prescription-drug mortality rate was 28.9 per 100,000, which is highest in the nation.
