BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Western Washington University is getting a grant from the National Science Foundation to study how math and science is taught at local elementary schools.
The nearly $450,000 grant will be used to compare the models of elementary teachers who specialize in math and science to those who teach all subjects.
Kimberly Markworth, Assistant Professor of Mathematics Education at Western, she says more schools are turning to math and science specialists as the United States falls behind other nations in math and science.
The three year project will study the different models of elementary math and science teaching at six school districts in Whatcom and Skagit counties.
Markworth says the aim of the study is to improve teaching methods and student learning at elementary schools nationwide.
