Woman hit by stray bullet in Ferndale dies

FERNDALE, Wash. – A Bellingham woman struck by a stray bullet at a Fathers’ Day barbeque in Ferndale has died.

Whatcom County Undersheriff Jeff Parks says the 23-year-old died at the hospital Monday morning.

Police received a call saying bullets were striking a home on Gadwa Road.

Parks says the bullets were coming from five people target shooting across the Nooksack River nearly a half-mile away.

Two convicted felons, 40-year-old Douglas Quiding of Ferndale and 23-year-old Robert A. Lee of Bellingham have been arrested for illegally possessing guns.

More charges are possible as deputies investigate the shooting.

The victim’s name has not been released.
