WWU Soccer teams split Wins


CHILLIWACK, B.C. – Western Washington University scored twice in the final 17 minutes as it blanked University of Fraser Valley, 2-0, on Tuesday in a women’s soccer exhibition game at Townsend Park.

The game was the second of three exhibitions for the Vikings, the defending Great Northwest Athletic Conference champions and ranked No.12 nationally in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America/NCAA Division II Preseason Top 25. They blanked British Columbia, 3-0, last Saturday, all of their goals coming in the first half.

WWU’s Jessica Bertucci (So., Bellingham/Sehome) snapped a scoreless tie with a goal in the 73rd minute as Anna Geldenhuys (Sr., Bellevue/Sammamish) was credited with an assist. The Vikings’ Kim Cooper (Jr., Bellingham) scored an unassisted goal in the 88th minute.

WWU goalkeeper Alyssa Beauchamp (Sr., Vancouver/Mountain View) notched her second straight shutout, making one save.

The Vikings had a 15-9 shot advantage and a 3-1 edge in corner kicks.

WWU travels to Langley, B.C. , on Saturday, Aug. 31 (5 p.m.) for an exhibition with Trinity Western University.

The Vikings open their regular season on Sept. 7 at UC San Diego.


CHILLIWACK, B.C. – Ryan Liddiard scored on a free kick in the 34th minute and goalkeeper Mark Village made seven saves in posting a shutout as University of Fraser Valley defeated Western Washington University, 1-0, on Tuesday in a men’s soccer exhibition contest at Townsend Park.

It was the Vikings’ second of three exhibitions before their regular-season opener. They tied 1-1 at Trinity Western last Saturday.

Against UFV, WWU had a 10-8 shot advantage and five corner kicks to the Cascades’ two.

WWU goalkeeper Nico Terentjev (R-Fr., Mercer Island) made five saves.

The Vikings complete their exhibition schedule Friday, Aug. 30 (5 p.m.), playing host to Trinity Lutheran University at Orca Field on the Whatcom CC campus.
