Cleanup begins on La Conner marina fire

LA CONNER, Wash. – The cleanup after a five-alarm fire at the Shelter Bay Marina has begun and it’s reported that some fuel has spilled into the water.

The State Department of Ecology says it put an oil containment boom around the area shortly after the fire was put out.

The fire Friday evening involved nearly a dozen boats and seven of them sank. Many of them were filled with diesel fuel. Ecology says the extent of environmental damage is unknown.

An undetermined amount of fuel has leaked into the water, but Ecology says most of the fuel appears to be contained within the boom. A skimmer is also helping remove the oil.

The U.S. Coast Guard has brought in contractors to clean up the area and salvage the sunken boats. It’s expected to take several days.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Swinomish Police Department and Skagit County Fire Department.
