Custer dairy fined for manure spill

CUSTER, Wash. – A Custer dairy farm is being fined $6,000 for spilling manure into California Creek.

Hector Castro with the state Department of Agriculture says the spill at Pomeroy Dairy last October caused high levels of fecal bacteria in the creek.

The Whatcom County Health Department had to close shellfish harvesting at a beach near the mouth of California Creek for a week after the spill.

Pomeroy Farm has 30 days to appeal the fine.
