BELLINGHAM, Wash. –  Extra patrols will be out in force starting Friday looking for impaired drivers.

The DUI emphasis patrol runs through Labor Day.

Lieutenant Rob Sharpe of the Washington State Patrol says any use or combination of alcohol or drugs, including marijuana, can impair a person’s ability to drive.

Last year, police charged more than 1,200 people in Whatcom and San Juan counties with a DUI.
