OSO, Wash. –¬†Firefighters and others are raising money to help the fire chief of the small Oso volunteer department shoulder his workload after the deadly March 22 mudslide.

The Daily Herald reports that about $25,000 has been raised so far.

The goal is $66,000 so that Oso Fire Chief Willy Harper can take a year away from his regular ranch job to tackle numerous responsibilities he’s taken on since the mudslide.

Harper’s ranch boss had paid his wages and benefits even though he wasn’t able to get to work.

The money raised would allow Harper to devote himself temporarily to the fire chief post, while taking a leave of absence from his ranch job.
