BELLINGHAM, Wash. – Scammers are pretending to be law enforcement officers to try to get people to pay a fake fine.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s office says people in Bellingham have been getting calls saying a warrant is out for their arrest and they need to pay a fine for failing to show up for jury duty.

The callers ask to schedule a time and place for the fine to be paid.

They are using the names of real law enforcement officers and if you call the number back you’ll hear what sounds like the phone greeting at the sheriff’s office.

Real fines are normally paid in court, not at arranged locations and people are not notified of them over the phone.

If you get one of these calls don’t provide any information and contact the Whatcom County Sheriff’s office to report it.
