U.S. Attorney charges local financial adviser with fraud

BELLINGHAM, Wash. – A financial adviser in Bellingham is accused of stealing more than a quarter-million dollars from his clients.

Jeffrey Knutsen was the owner of Bellwether Wealth Management.

He was barred from financial advising by regulators in 2005 after a complaint that he embezzled from a customer’s account.

But Emily Langlie with the U.S. Attorney’s office says he kept working with clients and draining their retirement money.

Knutsen was arrested yesterday on charges of wire fraud.

He could get up to 20 years in prison if he’s found guilty.

Langlie says the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority website www.finra.org allows people to check an adviser’s background for free.
