‘Hobbit’ tops ‘Wolf of Wall Street’ at Christmas Day box office

“The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug” continued its reign atop the North American box office, inching out “The Wolf of Wall Street” for the number one spot on Christmas Day.

The second installment of the highly popular fantasy series opened on Dec. 13 and has taken the top spot for two weeks in a row.

On Christmas Day, Peter Jackson’s film brought in $9.3 million, with The Wolf Of Wall Street” following closely behind with $9.1 million.

Rounding out the top five on the festive movie day was Will Ferrell’s comedy “Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues,” which brought in $8.1 million, Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty,” with $7.8 million and David O. Russell’s “American Hustle,” which earned $7.4 million.

“Grudge Match,” “47 Ronin” and Justin Bieber’s “Believe” also opened over the holiday.
