North Korea reportedly mandates ‘Kim Jong Un’ haircuts

As if it wasn’t bad enough that North Koreans already had to choose their hairstyles from a list of state-approved ‘dos, now all men are reportedly being required to maintain a style matching that of Supreme Leader, and American basketball fan, Kim Jong Un.

The state-ordered hairstyle is being met with some backlash, The Korea Times, an English-language daily newspaper based in South Korea, reported on Wednesday.

American-based NKNews.org reports that the hairstyle mandate may be just a rumor, but does state that it wouldn’t be the first time North Korea involved itself in the personal appearance of its citizens. According to the site, state TV broadcast a program aimed at promoting hair “in accordance with Socialist lifestyle” that urged people to keep their hair neatly trimmed.

That show, which reportedly aired in 2005, suggested men visit a barber every 15 days to keep long hair at bay, as long locks are thought to sap nutrients- and therefore possible brainpower – from the wearer.
