BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- Investigators say a discarded cigarette caused a fire that significantly damaged an apartment building in north Bellingham over the weekend.
The fire at The Village at Baker Creek apartments on Primrose Lane was reported just before 6 p.m. Sunday.
Bellingham Fire Marshal Jason Napier says fire crews arrived within 5 minutes and saw flames spreading from a deck on the fourth floor.
“The fire had actually dropped down and lit the third floor and part of the second floor balconies on fire, so they had a 3-story fire to deal with,” said Napier.
“Luckily, the building was equipped with sprinklers, so the sprinklers inside the building kept the fire outside.”
It took fire crews 50 minutes to bring the fire under control.
Napier says the roof will have to be rebuilt.
Structural damage to the apartment is estimated at $110,000, while damage to the contents is estimated at $25,000.
Nobody was injured, but the occupants of two apartment units were displaced by the fire.
The local chapter of the American Red Cross responded and will be providing help to one of the families that needed shelter.
