OLYMPIA, Wash. -- The Washington State Senate has approved a bill legalizing same-sex marriage in the state. San Juan County Senator Kevin Ranker was very emotional over the vote as his father is openly gay. The measure now goes to the house which has enough votes to approve the legislation. Governor Gregoire has promised to sign the bill if it reaches her desk. Four Republicans crossed party lines to vote with most Democrats for the plan that will probably face a voter challenge. Opponents of same-gender marriage have promised a referendum fight if the bill becomes law. Washington State already has a domestic partnership law that's been in place since 2007. It covers everything except formal marriage vows for gay and lesbian couples.
