Stanwood Teacher Jailed In Wife's Death

MOUNT VERNON, Wash. (Metro)  -- A Stanwood Middle School teacher is in jail instead of the classroom today, accused of killing his wife at their Mount Vernon home.

Police Lieutenant Chris Cammock tells heraldnet.com that 49-year-old William Rodgers was arrested Wednesday and is being held at the Skagit County jail for investigation of second-degree murder.

Officers were called to the couple's home Monday morning after emergency crews found Rodgers' 48-year-old wife unconscious and not breathing.

Rodgers told officers that his wife had apparently fallen down a flight of stairs.

Cammock says evidence collected so far does not point to an accidental fall.

Stanwood-Camano School District Superintendent Jean Shumate says Rodgers has taught at Stanwood Middle School since 1996.

He is now on unpaid administrative leave.

Anyone with information about the death is asked to call Stanwood police.
