Gay Marriage On Hold In Washington State

OLYMPIA, Wash.  (Metro)  -- Gay marriage is on hold in Washington state.

That's after opponents of same-sex marriage today submitted an estimated 232,000 signatures to the Secretary of State.

The validity of those signatures must still be verified, but the number submitted far exceeds the minimum 120,000-577,000 signatures needed to get the issue on the November ballot.

A group called Preserve Marriage Washington wants to put the question of whether gays can marry before voters.

Legislation allowing gay marriage was signed into law in February by Governor Chris Gregoire and was slated to take effect tomorrow.
