Body Of Mt. Baker Skier Recovered

MT. BAKER, Wash. -- Search and Rescue volunteers have recovered the body of a skier who died on Mt. Baker last Friday.

Thirty-four-year-old Keith Hardy of Seattle fell off a cliff near the Coleman Headwall Friday afternoon.

Hardy was skiing down Mt. Baker with a group that had summited the mountain earlier in the day.

Whatcom County Sheriff Bill Elfo says hardy was an experienced outdoorsman.

His body was recovered around 12:30 yesterday afternoon at an elevation of 8200 feet.

Elfo says volunteers put their lives on the line to brave the unstable mountain conditions.

The sheriff's office, Bellingham Mountain Rescue and a National Park Service helicopter helped in the recovery.

Weather conditions on the mountain hampered previous recovery efforts.

Hardy's body was taken to Bellingham and released to the Whatcom County medical examiner.
