BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A 16-year-old boy finds the gun brandished in a July 8 gang fight at Lake Samish Park when he steps on it. The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office says two 16-year-old boys were swimming at the park when one teenager stepped on the gun as he was coming ashore. When he picked it up and saw that it was a gun he immediately put it back down and stood guard as his friend went for help. Deputies determined the gun had been in the water since last week’s incident. Two teens were arrested in that confrontation between two rival gangs. A 16-year-old boy with several crimes already under his belt was arrested for brandishing the weapon. Nineteen-year-old Erik Melgar of Mount Vernon was arrested and turned over to Skagit County for several warrants.
