SEATTLE, Wash. (Metro) -- Seattle Public Utilities says Waste Management could be fined up to $1.25 million per day starting Wednesday if garbage service continues to be disrupted by a strike.
The walkout, which is being staged by 153 recycle and yard-waste truck drivers over pay and benefits, began last Wednesday morning in King and Snohomish counties.
Other cities that have similar contracts with Waste Management could also impose fines, meaning the company could be obligated to fork over up to $3 million daily.
County and local government officials are urging both Waste Management and the Teamsters to return to the negotiating table.
