OLYMPIA, Wash. (Metro) -- The state Libertarian Party is suing to keep the Republican presidential ticket off the November ballot in Washington.
Libertarian Party officials say the Republican ticket does not qualify because the GOP doesn't have "major party" status, which the Libertarians contend is reserved for parties that hold a nominating convention in Washington and collect at least a thousand signatures by August 3.
Katie Blinn, elections co-director for the Secretary of State's Office, says the 2008 presidential election kept the Republicans in major-party status because the ticket received more than the necessary five percent of the vote.
Blinn says major-party status for both Republicans and Democrats carries over to the 2012 election.
