Tragic Hiking Accident Takes Life Of Ferndale Man

CHELAN, Wash. --  A Ferndale native died in a tragic hiking accident at the Alpine Lakes wilderness area in Chelan County Saturday night.

Forty-year-old William Berry, who lived in Lakewood, was returning to an area known as "high camp" with his 9-year-old son after a day of fishing at Lake Donald.

They were hiking down a steep boulder field when berry lost his footing and fell more than 200 feet.

Chelan County Sheriff Brian Burnett says Berry was unable to walk...

Campers in the area eventually heard the son yelling for help and called authorities after 9 p.m. Sheriff Burnett says searchers had a hard time locating Berry because of the darkness.

They found his body near the lake around 3 a.m. Two of Berry's brothers who were also at high camp took part in the search.
