Local Elementary School Honored

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- An elementary school in Bellingham is one of 58 schools recognized by the state for making big improvements over the past three years.

Sunnyland Elementary School has been designated a high-progress "Reward School" by the state superintendent of public instruction.

State achievement test scores for the 2011-2012 school year were released yesterday.

Brian Rick with Bellingham schools says the recognition means Sunnyland scored in the top ten percent in reading and math out of schools with high numbers of children from low-income families.

The Bellingham School District overall is showing an increase in students meeting standards for math in the latest assessment scores.

The district's passing rates in math for the last school year are up over the previous year in every tested grade level except 8th grade.
