Annie Lennox deeply moved by family tree show

Annie Lennox was left reeling after tracing her ancestry on TV show Who Do You Think You Are? and discovering her family history is blighted by child labor and an illegitimate birth.

The former Eurythmics singer agreed to take part in the BBC show, which traces the family roots of celebrities, and there were several surprises in store for the Why hitmaker.
In the program, which was broadcast in the U.K. this week, Lennox discovered her great-great-grandmother on her father's side was an orphan and was forced into work at the age of 10, and that her maternal grandfather once danced with Britain's Queen Mother.

But the revelations have had a lasting effect on Lennox, who insists she's been deeply touched by her involvement in the show.

In a post on her Facebook page, she writes, "I'm still deeply affected by the experience of Who Do you Think You Are. It's not something that you can just go through and forget about. It's opened up a whole new awareness of the past for me. Not only in a personal sense, but also in the ways that it's altered my view of social and political history.

"An entire half hour segment was filmed with regard to my paternal Grandparents, describing how they personally took up the fight against Fascism in the streets of Aberdeen (in Scotland) in the 1920s. I'm so proud of them for that. They took risks and stood up for what they believed, in order to prevent the propagation of Fascist ideology, while struggling to secure better conditions and rights for working men and their families... Ancestry is infinitely farther reaching than you can even begin to imagine. And if it weren't for 'them'... none of us would be here in the first place!" (ZN/FCB/MT)
