Port Of Bellingham Accepting Proposals For Granary Building

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A Bellingham Port Commissioner says it's time for developers who are interested in saving the granary building to put their money where their mouth is.

The Port of Bellingham has agreed to give developers a chance to submit proposals for projects that would re-use the historic building.

Developers toured the granary last month and asked the port for a chance to submit ideas.

Commissioner Michael McAuley says he's already met with people who are interested in making proposals for redevelopment.

He says he's only going to accept proposals that look good and connect Central Avenue to the water's edge, and that could get expensive.

The port was planning to demolish the historic building, but McAuley says the marketplace should determine if redeveloping the granary is economically worthwhile.
