B.C. Budget Problems Could Affect Bellingham Economy

BELLINGHAM, Wash. -- A local business expert says Whatcom County could see a drop in Canadian shoppers because of a wage and hiring freeze in British Columbia.

The B.C. Finance Minister announced Thursday that the province's budget deficit would be bigger than expected thanks to a drop in natural gas prices.

Bellingham/Whatcom Chamber of Commerce & Industry president Ken Oplinger says B.C.'s budget problems may cause in a drop in local border crossings.

Oplinger says that after three years of constant growth, this is the first sign of economic problems that could result in a drop in border crossings for Whatcom County.

He says the budget cuts combined with a possible change in power in British Columbia might also eventually bring the Canadian dollar back below parity with the U.S. dollar.
