JOINT BASE LEWIS-MCCHORD, Wash.  (Metro)  -- The Pentagon reports an Army ranger stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord was killed Friday in Afghanistan.  

Officials say 26-year-old Sergeant Thomas MacPherson, a native of Long Beach, California, was killed by small arms fire while on patrol during combat operations.  

MacPherson was assigned to the 2nd Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment, U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Joint Base Lewis-McChord.  

He was on his fifth tour of duty in Afghanistan.
